Realising an Impactful Campus, Unud Holds AI-Based Textbook Writing Workshop to Enhance Teacher Competency at SMPN 1 Kuta
Kuta, 2 July 2026 – Driven by the spirit of Diktisaintek Berdampak, Udayana University has delivered a tangible solution to enhance the competencies of teachers in Kuta Village, one of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences' partner communities. As part of the Program Udayana Mengabdi, the English Literature Study Program organised a Workshop on AI-Based Textbook Development for teachers at SMP Negeri (State Junior High School) 1 Kuta. This four-day event, held from 29 June to 2 July 2026, is a concrete manifestation of the "Impactful Campus" transformation, actively supporting the independence and progress of its partner school.
The workshop, hosted at SMP Negeri 1 Kuta, commenced with a warm address from the school principal, I Ketut Lokasanti, S.Kom., M.Pd. He expressed his delight at Udayana University's sustained commitment. "This ongoing collaboration has a direct and meaningful impact on our teachers. It is a genuine action by Udayana University to provide solutions for enhancing our educators' competencies in the digital era," he stated.
The event was officially opened by the Head of the Badung Regency Office of Education, Youth, and Sports, represented by the Head of the Technology Development Division, Mr. Agus Ariana Eka Putra, S.H. In his remarks, he emphasised that impactful, real-world programs like this must be nurtured and utilised to the fullest to drive innovation in schools. "This initiative is a prime example of cross-sectoral collaboration between a university and the community, especially the teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Kuta. This workshop is highly relevant for equipping teachers to develop pertinent teaching materials, while also showcasing the university's role in grassroots educational transformation," he elaborated.
The workshop was guided directly by the Head of the Community Service Team, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Mulyawan, S.S., M.Hum., along with a team of lecturers and students. The program aimed to boost teachers' digital literacy, specifically in leveraging AI to compile personalised textbooks aligned with their respective Lesson Plans (RPP), thereby supporting the school's autonomy in developing its own teaching resources. The activities were structured comprehensively to ensure optimal and immediate impact.
Day One laid the academic foundation by mastering Zotero. Teachers were trained to manage references and citations digitally, thereby building a cornerstone of academic rigour in their writing.
Day Two focused on innovative design and crafting personalised book outlines. With the aid of platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini, teachers were guided to create systematic and personalised learning structures tailored to their specific subjects and lesson plans.
Day Three was dedicated to core content development through innovative prompting. Teachers directly practised using generative AI to expand the narrative for each chapter, optimising both time and creative ideas without compromising the depth of the material.
Day Four centred on validation and refinement of the compiled textbook drafts. Teachers cross-checked references using Zotero and polished the language using Grammarly and QuillBot, resulting in drafts that are both academically valid and high-quality.
Fueled by high enthusiasm and a strong learning spirit from all participating teachers, the workshop concluded with highly satisfactory achievements. It successfully produced 14 textbook drafts covering 11 core subjects: Indonesian Language, Hindu Religious Education, Pancasila Education, Mathematics, Natural Sciences (IPA), Social Sciences (IPS), English Language, Informatics, Arts and Culture, Physical Education (PJOK), and Balinese Language.
This workshop's success is expected to act as a catalyst for digital transformation at SMP Negeri 1 Kuta while strengthening the synergy between the school and the university to continuously improve the quality of education in Badung Regency. Furthermore, this achievement not only reinforces Udayana University's commitment to fulfilling the Three Pillars of Higher Education but also stands as tangible proof that the spirit of Diktisaintek Berdampak can be translated into truly transformative programs.
