OCSEAN training and workshop on Computational Statistics and Data Science for Linguistics in University of Bristol, UK
Following the successful training and workshop of several lecturers from the Bachelor of English Literature (BoEL), Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University on Tartu, Estonia in 2024, this year, 2025, which also marks the last year of OCSEAN grant, invited 3 lecturers from BoEL, Udayana University; they are I Made Sena Darmasetiyawan, I Komang Sumaryana Putra, and Putu Wahyu Widiatmika to join the training and workshop on Computational Statistics and Data Science for Linguistics in University of Bristol, United Kingdom, held from 5th of May up to 3rd of July 2025.
This event was also participated by representatives from Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Davao Medical School Foundation, Philippines, and The University of Papua New Guinea, Papua New Guinea.
This workshop was aimed at providing courses by JGI training material in Beginning Python, Intermediate Python, Introduction to Data Analysis in Python, Applied Data Analysis in Python, and Computational Methods for Social Sciences. All these courses were mandatory skills required for the main purpose of the whole event – to computationally analyse all languages and genetics data spread across Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea.
Following the workshop, data analysis was chaired by Daniel Lawson, Professor of Data Science in the School of Mathematics, and assisted by Rachel Wood and Catherine Upex. The whole event for 2 months ended successfully with all the data initial comparison was able to be processed for future publications.
